As with all not-for-profit organisations, cost increases incurred can only be covered by those who contribute to those organisations.
For your information, a Union Newsletter containing details of what we have been doing and intend to do, will shortly be sent out to members and posted on our website.
This will include further, specific details of why increases have been proposed and approved, not only by this Branch Council, but also by resolution at National council held in Sydney in November 2015.
THERE WILL BE AN INCREASE OF $2.50 PER WEEK AS OF FIRST DEDUCTIONS JAN 2016.
The Branch council fully understands this is a significant increase, but with the Branch running on two consecutive yearly losses for a number of reasons, it is important to act in a financially responsible manner to address the current losses.
A lengthy discussion was held around the Branch Council table when considering the increase. Council discussed a range of matters including adopting marginal previous increases, new monetary management practices, and the worse than expected vacancy rates in the property income stream. Council also sought comparisons with other Unions, which confirmed that even when taking into account the rate increase, we are by no means an expensive Union to be a member of.
Comparisons made against fellow RTBU State Branches as well as other sectors, show the following fortnightly rates: AMWU-$34.67, MUA-$63.11, WAPOU-$31.70, and United Voice (Hospitality/cleaning, etc. on considerably less income than our members)-$27.00.
We hope members understand that this decision was made out of necessity, and that it needed to happen now in order to adequately resource for our members needs and develop the organisation moving forward.
We will continue to look for savings and rest assured every cent of your money is fully accountable and spent in the best interest of the Union and its members. Under the rules of the organisation, you are entitled to question any item/s with regards the finances published on our website.
As you well aware, our struggle and campaigns never get easier, and our passion and vigour to fight for our members and other Unionists rights do not wane.
Who else will fight for the rights of workers, hold politicians accountable, stop employers returning you to slavery conditions of employment, and campaign for the less fortunate in society? WHO?
WE ARE the only protection to prevent it from happening - that’s why they hate us, no other reason!
It is with your continued support that we will continue to carry on the fight and protect the rights of members for another 100 years!
A FINAL IMPORTANT REMINDER TO MEMBERS - ALL DUES ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE AND INCLUDE JOURNEY COVER TO AND FROM WORK.
Authorised P Woodcock, Secretary WA Branch - 24/12/2015.
